New course launch: The Way of Communion – May to December 2024

The Way of Communion – an opportunity to deepen knowledge/skills in Catholic Liturgy, Worship and Prayer

‘Liturgy and Worship’ is one of the four priorities singled out in Archbishop Bernard’s Pastoral Vision that informs and guides the current work of looking at how we work now to prepare more solid foundations for the Church in Birmingham in coming decades.

It is also the focus of the ‘Prayer and Liturgy Directory’ recently issued for Catholic schools, academies and colleges in England and Wales.

Ordained ministers have had the opportunity to be introduced to what the Liturgy and Prayer of the Church asks of them. It is rare for anything very much to be made available to lay ministers – yet in our changing circumstances lay ministers are likely to be invited – or simply need – to take more responsibility for the preparation and leading of times of prayer, acts of worship, and celebration of the Liturgy in their communities – parishes, schools, religious communities, etc.

The Way of Communion is offered to help ministers be introduced to the Church’s tradition and expectations in this area – and provide a simple, safe and relaxed forum for discussion and learning.

The course runs from May to December (with August off!) with an online meeting from 7.30 – 8.30pm on the first two Mondays of each month – with those who wish welcome to stay on beyond the hour to continue and broaden the conversation, with nothing off limits!

The course is FREE. Participants will only need access to Zoom, and their own copies of Catholic Liturgy and the Prayer and Liturgy Directory – and are asked to read the relevant chapter/sections in advance of each online meeting.

For more information and to register please contact the course leader, Fr Allen Morris, at fr.allen.morris@rcaob.org.uk

Fr Allen is parish priest of St Nicholas, Boldmere, a member of the Birmingham Liturgy Commission, and former Secretary of the Department for Christian Life and Worship of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

Bishop Responds to Health and Social Care Select Committee Report on Assisted Suicide

Bishop John Sherrington, Lead Bishop for Life Issues, has issued a statement on the publication of a report by the Health and Social Care Select Committee on Assisted Dying/Assisted Suicide.

Statement

Given that Parliament has already rejected any changes to the law on assisted suicide in 2015 and 2021, I welcome the decision of the Select Committee not to recommend the legalisation of assisted suicide. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales opposes its legalisation out of concern for the good of every person in society, the protection of this good in law, and the spiritual and pastoral care of the sick and dying. The act of assisted suicide violates the dignity inherent to every person’s life, which is to be cherished and cared for at all stages until natural death.

As highlighted in the Committee’s report, experts have noted that there have been major problems in safeguarding the vulnerable and those without full mental capacity when assisted suicide and/or euthanasia has been introduced in other jurisdictions.

Recognising the distress and suffering of those who are sick and vulnerable, I welcome the Committee’s recommendation that the accessibility and provision of palliative and end of life care needs to be improved – something the Catholic Church has consistently called for.

For Catholics and many others, consolation and support in times of terminal illness can be experienced through prayer, the sacrament of the sick and the caring and compassionate presence of loved ones as a person prepares for eternal life.

As Pope Francis has written, “human compassion consists not in causing death, but in embracing the sick, in supporting them in their difficulties, in offering them affection, attention, and the means to alleviate suffering”.

“We Dare to Say” – 5 Sessions on the Our Father

To help the Church in England & Wales mark the Year of Prayer, a new resource has been developed by the Bishops’ Conference called We Dare to Say, which looks at the petitions of the Our Father in five ready-to-use sessions.

“Each session includes scripture, prayers and a reflection with questions. The connection of the Our Father with the sacraments and the devotional life is explored, and wisdom from the saints is offered for the spiritual growth of group participants and individuals alike.”

Many parishes have already planned experiences, courses and catechesis on various ways of prayer. This resource can supplement what is happening and help to create further opportunities for Catholics to discover the treasures and beauty of Catholic prayer, and especially the Our Father which Pope Francis calls, “the life programme of every disciple!”
